A quotation is the reproduction of a short excerpt from a previous statement or writing in the drafting of a text or in a form of oral expression. It can register in a reference.
a quotation is "a fact of speech (of writing), by individual and unique definition, which is repeated as such - quoted - by another speaker or an infinity of speakers"
The quote is, with plagiarism, the allusion, the hypertext link and the reference, one of the forms of the phenomenon of intertextuality.
The notion of quotation contains, according to Antoine Compagnon, five "elementary structures": a text 1 "where the utterance appears for the first time and where it is taken", a text 2 "where the same statement appears a second time, in recovery "," the statement itself ", an author 1 (the one quoted) and an author 2 (the one who quotes) In reality, things are more complex. For example, the author of the spoken word or the text quoted is generally different from the one who makes the quotation, but an author may be called upon to quote himself; text 2 (recovery) may differ more or less from text 1
The quote is punctuated by quotation marks; sometimes it is given in italics.
The essence of a quote being to be an excerpt. It is thus distinguished from maxims or proverbs, currencies and other formulas, sayings, slogans, etc. who are, more generally, anonymous. But, this word can serve as a generic term for any form of brief expression, especially in collections of quotations.
Authors such as Blaise Pascal and certain genres or styles lend themselves more to becoming sources of quotations: dialogues classical theater, aphorisms, poetry, etc.
